The Lovers on the Bridge

On Paris’s closed Pont Neuf, two young vagrants build an uneasy romance: Alex, a would-be circus performer numbed by alcohol and pills, and Michèle, a painter whose failing eyesight has pushed her onto the streets. Denis Lavant is Alex, raw and impulsive, opposite Juliette Binoche’s Michèle, who clings to her work and the possibility of treatment as her vision fades. As they scrape by on the bridge and in the subway tunnels below, the Seine, the locked-down monument, and bursts of Bicentennial fireworks become the backdrop for a love story shaped by hunger, dependency, and life at the edge of the city.
