In Japan’s Taishō era, a university professor becomes entangled with an old acquaintance after the two meet again and fixate on a strange gramophone recording of Sarasate’s “Zigeunerweisen.” What starts as a renewed friendship turns uneasy as their visits, marriages, and affairs begin to mirror one another. A woman appears, disappears, and returns in ways that seem to slip past ordinary logic, and each encounter leaves the men less certain of what they have seen. As desire, jealousy, and obsession build, the story drifts between everyday life and ghostly possibility, until the record itself feels like part of the spell.
