Double Suicide

DramaRomance105 min

In 18th-century Japan, a prosperous paper merchant with a wife and children becomes consumed by his love for a courtesan, setting his household and livelihood on a collision course with the era's strict social codes. Kichiemon Nakamura and Shima Iwashita lead Masahiro Shinoda's adaptation of The Love Suicides at Amijima, where Jihei's attempts to free Koharu only deepen the strain on his family and reputation. The film draws on bunraku theater, folding stagecraft and visible theatrical artifice into a story of desire, obligation, and public shame.
