In contemporary Russia, a divorcing couple’s bitterness spills onto their 12-year-old son. Maryana Spivak is Zhenya, already absorbed in a new relationship and impatient to leave her old life behind; Aleksey Rozin’s Boris is doing the same, even as their arguments turn into threats about who will be left with Alyosha. After the boy witnesses one of their worst fights and disappears, the parents who can barely speak without blame are forced back into contact to look for him. What follows starts from a family already hollowed out by resentment, neglect, and the urge to begin again elsewhere.
