Before the presidency, Henry Fonda is Abraham Lincoln as a self-taught young lawyer finding his footing in 1830s Illinois. Encouraged by his first love, Ann Rutledge, he heads to Springfield, opens a law practice, and soon takes on the defense of two brothers accused of murder. John Ford's black-and-white drama follows Lincoln through courtrooms, town gatherings, and his first meetings with Mary Todd, focusing less on monument than on the making of a public figure. The case at the center gives the film its tension, while the early chapters sketch Lincoln's wit, patience, and growing reputation at the bar.
