Laura Antonelli is Eugenia Di Maqueda, a Sicilian aristocrat who discovers on her wedding night that her new husband is actually her brother. To avoid scandal and protect the family inheritance, Eugenia and Raimondo Corrao — with Alberto Lionello as the equally trapped groom — agree to go on in public as husband and wife while living in private as siblings. What follows turns on appearances: a marriage that must be performed for relatives and society, and a bride whose frustration keeps colliding with the rigid codes of honor, desire, and reputation in early 20th-century Sicily.
