Audie Murphy is Billy the Kid, a young man pulled into the Lincoln County land war in New Mexico after the rancher who once gave him a break is murdered by a rival's gunman. Bent on revenge, Billy signs on with another employer, only to be used as a weapon in a larger feud and left holding the blame when the killing escalates. Albert Dekker figures prominently among the powerful men steering the conflict, while Gale Storm is the employer's young wife, the woman Billy can't stop circling back to. The film traces Billy's slide from ranch hand to outlaw in vivid Technicolor Western country.
