As the Civil War reaches Texas, three ranch partners watch their land destroyed in a raid and join the Confederate troops, each for his own reasons. Joel McCrea and Zachary Scott are among the men at the center of the story, with Alexis Smith and Dorothy Malone woven into the lives and loyalties around them. The attack, led by Luke Cottrell, turns a working partnership into something far less stable, and the story tracks what happens when war, money, and divided allegiances start pressing on a friendship that began on the same ranch.
