In 1950s Oxford, C.S. Lewis is a celebrated writer and professor whose carefully ordered bachelor life shifts when he meets American poet Joy Gresham. Anthony Hopkins is Lewis, moving through college dinners, tutorials, and literary debates with formal ease, while Debra Winger’s Joy brings a sharper, less guarded presence into his world. As their friendship deepens, the film follows the private changes behind a public intellectual’s reserve, tracing an unexpected relationship through Lewis’s academic routines and the social codes of postwar England.
