In an English country house between the wars, the butler Stevens gives his life to perfect service, keeping his feelings buried beneath routine, duty, and strict ideas about what his position requires. The arrival of the capable housekeeper Miss Kenton unsettles that order. As they manage the household together, affection grows in the spaces between formal conversations, small disagreements, and the daily work that keeps the estate running. But Stevens remains bound to his employer and to a code of loyalty that leaves little room for honesty. Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson anchor a story about missed chances, private restraint, and the cost of building a life around service.
