Henry Fonda is Mister Roberts, a Navy officer desperate to see combat but marooned during World War II on a cargo ship where his daily fight is with the man in command. James Cagney's Captain Morton rules the vessel through bullying and petty discipline, turning routine duty into a steady war of nerves. As Roberts tries to look out for the crew and push for a transfer, he finds allies in the ship’s weary doctor and in Ensign Pulver (Jack Lemmon), an officer better known for dodging responsibility than seeking it.
