In Tokyo in 1940, Kayo Nogami is left to hold her family together after her husband is arrested and accused of being a Communist. Sayuri Yoshinaga is Kayo, working from morning to night to raise her two daughters and keep the household going while waiting for news. As the war years press in, she leans on Shigeru’s sister Hisako and Tadanobu Asano’s Yamazaki, a former student who stays close to the family. The film follows the daily strain of work, school, and uncertainty as one household is reshaped by political fear and World War II.
