Veteran thief Joe Moore thinks he has the perfect setup until a security camera catches him on a jewelry job, leaving his crew exposed and unpaid. Gene Hackman is Joe, a career criminal now squeezed by his fence, Bergman (Danny DeVito), who withholds the money he owes and forces the gang into a riskier score involving a Swiss gold shipment. Joe’s partner Bobby Blane, utility man Pinky Pincus, and Joe’s younger wife all have their own loyalties, while Bergman insists his young lieutenant be part of the operation. Written and directed by David Mamet, the film turns on suspicion, bargaining, and shifting control inside the crew.
