Sullivan's Travels

ActionAdventureComedyDramaRomance91 min

Hollywood director John L. Sullivan is tired of making light comedies and decides he needs firsthand hardship before he can make a serious film about poverty. Joel McCrea is the successful filmmaker, who leaves the studio behind, disguises himself as a hobo, and heads out into Depression-era America to “know trouble” for himself. Along the way he falls in with Veronica Lake’s sharp, skeptical young woman, an aspiring actress who becomes his companion on the road. Written and directed by Preston Sturges, the story moves between Hollywood satire, romantic sparring, and the increasingly messy consequences of Sullivan trying to escape his own privilege.
