The Lady Eve
ComedyRomance97 min
Aboard an ocean liner, Jean (Barbara Stanwyck), a sharp-eyed card dealer and con artist, singles out wealthy Charles (Henry Fonda) as an easy mark. The plan gets messier when she starts to care about him, and messier still after Charles decides she’s only after his money and breaks things off. Unwilling to let him go—or let the insult pass—Jean finds her way back into his orbit under a new identity: the elegant Lady Eve Sidwich. Preston Sturges builds the mix of romance, deception, and revenge around Stanwyck’s poise and Fonda’s flustered innocence.
