Dennis Quaid is a widowed professor whose intellect and composure stop being much use once his private life starts to fray. A new romance, with Sarah Jessica Parker at the center of it, begins to disrupt the routines he’s built around work and family. At the same time, the unexpected arrival of his adopted brother (Thomas Haden Church) brings a looser, more unpredictable presence into the house. As Lawrence Wetherhold tries to keep control, the film stays close to the awkward overlap between academic confidence, family strain, and the parts of adulthood that can’t be reasoned through.
