One night on a lonely road outside Los Angeles, private detective Mike Hammer gives a ride to a terrified hitchhiker and stumbles into a murder that opens onto something much larger. After thugs force his car off the road and the woman is killed, Hammer starts hunting for whoever wanted her silenced — and for the mysterious prize she seemed to be fleeing. Ralph Meeker is Hammer, a rough, relentless investigator moving through a 1950s underworld of gangsters, fixers, and sealed-off secrets. Directed by Robert Aldrich, the film turns hard-boiled detective fiction toward atomic-age paranoia.
