Equinox Flower

ComedyDrama118 min

Hirayama prides himself on being modern about marriage until his daughter announces that she intends to marry a coworker, not the man chosen through an arranged match. Shin Saburi is the father, whose public liberalism starts to crack when the conflict moves from abstract opinions to his own household. Kinuyo Tanaka and Ineko Arima are among the women around him, quietly pushing back as he refuses to admit he’s been outmaneuvered. In 1958 Japan, Yasujiro Ozu frames the family dispute with dry humor and close attention to the gap opening between parental authority and a younger generation determined to choose for itself.
