The Only Son
Drama87 min
After years of sacrifice to send her only son to school in Tokyo, a rural widow finally travels to see the life he has made for himself. Chôko Iida is the mother who gave up what little she had for his education; Shin'ichi Himori's son is now a night school teacher, married with a child and struggling to support his family. In 1930s Japan, the visit brings country and city into sharp contrast, as a long-held dream of upward mobility meets the ordinary pressures of work, money, and family duty.
