Hideko Takamine is Hisako Oishi, a young schoolteacher assigned to a poor village on a Japanese island in 1928. Her bond with twelve pupils carries the story through the next eighteen years, as ordinary lessons and walks to school give way to poverty, injury, separation, and the rise of wartime nationalism. The children grow up, the village changes, and reunions arrive under harder circumstances than anyone expected. With Chishû Ryû among the adults around her, the film follows one class from childhood into the years surrounding World War II, keeping its focus on daily life and the long ties between teacher and students.
