A San Francisco dentist marries a woman whose sudden lottery win turns affection into fixation. Gibson Gowland is John McTeague, living a modest life until ZaSu Pitts's Trina brings a pile of money into their marriage and begins guarding it with growing suspicion. Hovering around them is Marcus (Jean Hersholt), a resentful friend whose interest in Trina and the winnings keeps the pressure rising. Erich von Stroheim's silent drama follows money as it corrodes a household, pushing a marriage from comfort toward jealousy, poverty, and violence.
