Herbert Marshall is Gaston Monescu, a polished thief who falls for fellow pickpocket Lily (Miriam Hopkins), and the two turn romance into a professional alliance. Their next target is wealthy perfume executive Mariette Colet, with Gaston slipping into her orbit under an assumed name and taking a job as her secretary. As the scheme tightens, Kay Francis's Mariette becomes more than a mark, complicating the plan Gaston and Lily built together.
