Stanley Crawford is a celebrated stage magician and an uncompromising skeptic, summoned to the 1920s French Riviera to expose a young psychic as a fraud. Colin Firth’s Stanley arrives armed with technique, vanity, and absolute certainty; Emma Stone is Sophie Baker, whose apparent gifts unsettle him as much as her presence does. As visits to grand houses and Riviera outings pull them into the same social circle, Stanley’s investigation turns into a running clash between reason, performance, and the possibility that he may not be able to explain everything. Eileen Atkins and Marcia Gay Harden round out the surrounding family world.
