The Woman Next Door
DramaRomance106 min
Bernard lives a settled married life in provincial France until the new neighbor across the way turns out to be Mathilde, the woman he once loved. Gérard Depardieu is Bernard, trying to keep old feelings buried; Fanny Ardant’s Mathilde arrives with a husband and a past that is just as hard to ignore. As the two households fall into a tense routine of chance encounters and private meetings, their history pushes against the ordinary rhythms of marriage, family, and suburban respectability. François Truffaut keeps the story close to the small gestures and ruptures of a love affair that refuses to stay finished.
