After a family tragedy, composer John Russell leaves New York for Seattle, hoping a long-empty mansion will give him some distance from grief. George C. Scott is John, a music professor whose quiet new start is interrupted by pounding noises, a child’s ball, and signs that the house’s past hasn’t stayed buried. As he follows strange clues — including a music box, a tape recording, and the mansion’s old records — the story widens from private mourning into a supernatural mystery tied to the house itself. Trish Van Devere and Melvyn Douglas appear alongside Scott in Peter Medak’s 1980 haunted-house film.
