Police sergeant Neil Howie arrives on a remote Scottish island to investigate reports of a missing girl, only to find a community that insists she never existed. Edward Woodward's Howie is a rigid Christian outsider, and every lead draws him deeper into the villagers' pagan rites, bawdy songs, and May Day preparations. Presiding over the island with amused authority, Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee) meets Howie's questions with charm rather than help. What begins as a disappearance case becomes a clash between official order and a closed world built on ritual, secrecy, and harvest belief.
