Farmer Vincent Smith runs a roadside motel and adjoining farm with his sister Ida, luring in unsuspecting travelers, burying them alive, and turning them into the smoked meats that made his name. Rory Calhoun is Vincent, all folksy manners and butcher-shop menace, while Nancy Parsons’s Ida stands right beside him in the family business. The film folds slasher violence, cannibal shock, and deadpan humor into the same rural setup, with the motel, smokehouse, and farm all serving one gruesome operation.
