In old Kyoto, the wife of a prosperous printer becomes entangled with a young clerk after a desperate act inside the household sets rumor and suspicion in motion. What begins as an attempt to protect a servant from punishment turns into a scandal that leaves the woman and the clerk accused of adultery, whether they have crossed that line or not. As the charge hardens, duty, class, and the law close around them. Their flight from arrest forces them out of the ordered world they know and into a life of pursuit, where each refuge brings new danger and their bond changes under pressure.
