A small-time psychic and her cab-driving boyfriend are hired to find an heir who disappeared into California years earlier, and the search pulls them toward a kidnapping ring. Barbara Harris is Blanche Tyler, a not-quite-reputable spiritualist taking fees from the hopeful and the gullible; Bruce Dern’s George rides shotgun on the investigation and helps chase leads from Los Angeles to San Francisco. The man they’re looking for, Arthur (William Devane), has his own reasons to be wary of strangers asking questions, especially with Fran, Karen Black’s coolly calculating partner, at his side. Alfred Hitchcock’s final feature threads fraud, greed, and murder through a detective story with a sly comic streak.
