Ordered to escort a young sailor to a naval prison in New Hampshire, two Navy lifers turn the trip into a string of bars, train rides, and rule-breaking stops up the East Coast. Jack Nicholson is Buddusky, a loose-cannon petty officer who, with Mulhall (Otis Young), takes pity on Meadows, the withdrawn offender at the center of their orders. As the three move from a Virginia base through Washington, New York, and Boston, the film mixes locker-room bravado, shabby detours, and a growing sense of how tightly Navy life has boxed all of them in.
