Ashes and Diamonds
DramaRomanceWar103 min
In 1945, as World War II ends and a new political order takes hold in Poland, former Home Army soldier Maciek Chełmicki is still fighting in the shadows. He works with the anti-Communist underground and receives orders to assassinate Szczuka, the local Communist party secretary. What should be a clean mission begins to fray as delays, mistakes, and the unsettled atmosphere of a country between wars keep pushing the killing out of reach. Over the course of a single tense stretch, Maciek, played by Zbigniew Cybulski, starts to question both the order and the life it binds him to, while a meeting with a young woman, played by Ewa Krzyżewska, opens the possibility of another path.
