Francesco

Drama104 min

After Francis of Assisi dies, the followers gathered around him recount the life Leone is trying to set down: the aristocrat’s son who knew war, prison, and privilege before turning away from his family to embrace poverty. Mickey Rourke is Francis, first seen as a forceful young nobleman and later as a man who gives up inheritance and status to live among beggars and the poor. Helena Bonham Carter’s Clare stands close to his conversion and to the early circle drawn to his example. Told through remembered episodes, the story moves between Francis’s life in 13th-century Assisi and the community left to preserve it.
