After the 1815 Restoration, Marcello Mastroianni is an aging revolutionary who wants out of the struggle that once defined him. Hiding from both the authorities and his former comrades, he is pulled back toward an attempted insurrection in Southern Italy, even as doubt, self-preservation, and old loyalties pull in opposite directions. Lea Massari and Mimsy Farmer move through the uneasy world around him, where private refuge and political commitment keep colliding. In post-Napoleonic Italy, the film centers on a man caught between a fading cause and the people still asking him to serve it.
