In a small Texas town, Sheriff John T. Chance arrests the brother of a powerful rancher for murder and has to hold the jail against the rancher’s men until the U.S. marshal arrives. John Wayne is Chance, backed by Dean Martin’s alcoholic deputy Dude, a young gunfighter (Ricky Nelson), and Stumpy, the limping jailer Walter Brennan makes both quarrelsome and dependable. Howard Hawks keeps the action close to the jailhouse, where long stretches of waiting give way to sudden bursts of gunfire.
