In Edo-period Japan, a low-ranking samurai’s orderly life is shattered when a sudden disaster leaves him unable to carry out the role that gives him status, purpose, and a place in his clan. As he struggles with dependence, shame, and the rigid codes around him, his marriage is tested by gossip, class pressure, and the constant scrutiny of the household that now sustains him. What begins as a domestic setback grows into a crisis of dignity and trust, forcing him to decide how far honor should govern the people closest to him. Directed by Yoji Yamada, the story stays close to the small humiliations and private strains that turn duty into something painful.
