Nicolas Cage is Charlie Kaufman, an L.A. screenwriter so tangled in self-doubt and writer’s block that adapting Susan Orlean’s The Orchid Thief starts to consume his life. His freeloading twin brother Donald, also embodied by Cage, is suddenly chasing screenwriting too, while Charlie grows fixated on Orlean (Meryl Streep) and her reporting on eccentric orchid hunter John Laroche. As Charlie’s stalled script pulls him closer to the people in the book, Spike Jonze’s film blurs memoir, satire, Hollywood anxiety, and Florida obsession until the writer, the screenplay, and the source material start folding into one another.
