Henri-Georges Clouzot's Inferno
Documentary102 min
In 1964, Henri-Georges Clouzot set out to make L’Enfer with major studio backing and an unlimited budget; three weeks later, the production had collapsed. This documentary reconstructs the unfinished film from original rushes, screen tests, on-location footage, interviews, and Clouzot’s own notes. Romy Schneider and Serge Reggiani appear in the surviving material, while dramatized scenes fill in passages that were never shot. The recovered footage lingers on the project’s visual experiments, with Clouzot pushing color, light, and distortion toward an expressionistic design that never reached completion.
