In the last years of the Ottoman Empire, the poor Anatolian town of Saripinar is shaken by a small earthquake that does little actual damage. The real upheaval begins when a telegraph to the capital wildly overstates the disaster and reports that the town’s governor has been gravely injured. A local mishap suddenly becomes a matter for the central government, and Saripinar is pulled into the scramble that follows. As officials react to false news, the gap between what happened and what has been reported puts the town under growing pressure. The story turns a minor tremor into a chain of confusion, bureaucracy, and social embarrassment with consequences far beyond the quake itself.
