In 1957 Cherbourg, Geneviève and Guy are young and certain: Catherine Deneuve is the umbrella-shop owner’s daughter, and Nino Castelnuovo’s Guy is a garage mechanic about to leave for military service in Algeria. On the eve of his departure, their first love collides with adult decisions, family finances, and an unexpected pregnancy. Told entirely through song, the film follows Geneviève as her widowed mother pushes for stability and a wealthy diamond merchant enters the picture, turning a private romance into a choice about marriage, class, and what waits at home.
