With opening night only days away, stage actress Myrtle Gordon is coming apart during rehearsals for a new play about a woman shaken by aging. Gena Rowlands is Myrtle, a functioning alcoholic whose balance slips after she witnesses the death of a young fan chasing her limousine. As the Broadway premiere closes in, the accident starts to bleed into rehearsals, performance, and Myrtle’s sense of herself. Ben Gazzara and Joan Blondell are part of the theater company around her, caught between the demands of the production and Myrtle’s increasingly unstable search for answers.
