Robert Dupea drifts through oil-field jobs, bars, and roadside diners, keeping his past buried until news about his ailing father sends him back to his family home in Washington state. Jack Nicholson is Bobby, a former piano prodigy now living like a man with nowhere to stay for long, while Karen Black’s Rayette trails after him with dogged affection and little sense of the world he came from. The trip home forces Bobby’s blue-collar present up against the privileged family he left behind, with every stop exposing another piece of who he is and who he refuses to be.
