Jimmy MacDonald, an office clerk with a weakness for contests, thinks his luck has finally changed when a fake telegram says he’s won Maxford House Coffee’s $25,000 slogan prize. Dick Powell is Jimmy, whose supposed windfall sends him from the office to department stores and marriage plans with Betty (Ellen Drew), while the joke quickly gets out of hand. Written and directed by Preston Sturges, the film builds its comedy around coffee advertising, office politics, and the way a little good news can transform how everyone treats a man.
