Seven months after her daughter’s murder goes unsolved, Frances McDormand is Mildred Hayes, a mother in small-town Missouri who rents three roadside billboards to publicly challenge the local police. The message is aimed at Woody Harrelson’s Bill Willoughby, Ebbing’s respected chief, and it turns a private loss into a public feud. Mildred’s campaign rattles the town, widens the divide between her and law enforcement, and pulls in Willoughby’s violent second-in-command, turning the case into something argued over at home, at work, and all over Ebbing.
