During Detroit’s 1967 uprising, a police raid at the Algiers Motel becomes the flashpoint for a night of terror, accusations, and escalating violence. Kathryn Bigelow’s film narrows the wider unrest to a few harrowing hours, following the civilians and officers trapped inside an encounter shaped by racism and police abuse. John Boyega and Algee Smith are part of the ensemble at the center of the standoff, with Will Poulter on the other side of it. The story draws on the Algiers Motel incident, one of the most notorious episodes of that summer’s unrest in Detroit.
