On Bastøy, a reform school for boys outside Oslo, 17-year-old Erling arrives in the Norwegian winter of 1915 and quickly sees that the institution runs on beatings, hunger, and humiliation instead of reform. Based on a true story, the film follows his push to escape as the punishments harden the boys against the men in charge and a tragedy turns that defiance toward revolt. Benjamin Helstad leads the young ensemble, with Stellan Skarsgård in a cast built around the island’s constant pressure, freezing isolation, and the violence used to keep it in line.
