After stealing a bundle of cash in Arizona, Janet Leigh is Marion Crane, a real-estate clerk who heads out of town hoping to start over. A rainstorm sends her to the isolated Bates Motel, where Anthony Perkins's Norman Bates tends the desk and worries over his housebound mother in the old house above the property. Alfred Hitchcock turns Marion's stopover into a missing-person case, drawing in a private detective, Marion's sister Lila (Vera Miles), and her boyfriend Sam Loomis (John Gavin) as they follow the trail back to the motel.
