Bachir Lazhar arrives at a Montréal elementary school during a hard winter, taking over a classroom still shaken by its teacher’s suicide. Mohamed Fellag is the Algerian immigrant hired as a substitute, facing a roomful of children trying to process what happened; Sophie Nélisse is among the students watching him closely. As Bachir settles into the school, he keeps his own circumstances carefully out of view: he is seeking political refuge in Québec, and he is carrying a devastating loss of his own. The film stays close to the small rituals of the classroom as grief, discipline, and trust slowly find a place in the day.
