Sentenced to six years in a French prison, Malik El Djebena arrives alone, unable to read or write, and immediately at the mercy of the inmates who control the place. Tahar Rahim is Malik, a young prisoner pressed into service by a Corsican gang led by César Luciani; Niels Arestrup gives César the rigid authority of a man used to being obeyed. As Malik is handed one “mission” after another, he begins to understand how protection, bribery, and violence shape the prison’s hierarchy, moving carefully between Arab and Corsican circles while earning the gang’s confidence.
