In 1871, John Wayne is John Devlin, a professional gambler who elopes with Sandra “Sandy” Poli and heads for Dakota with plans to cash in on the railroad’s expansion. Vera Ralston’s Sandy knows where the line is headed and wants to buy land options before the boom hits. But in Fargo, local strongmen Jim Bender and Bigtree Collins are protecting their hold on the town by driving out farmers, destroying wheat, and pinning the damage on Indians. The trip north by stage and riverboat only deepens the trouble, especially after the couple’s money is stolen and Captain Bounce (Walter Brennan) enters the picture.
