When his son is condemned for the murder of his girlfriend after a country-house weekend in England, David Graham flies in from Canada to stop the execution. Michael Redgrave is David, a struggling writer and alcoholic whose years of neglect leave him trying to clear Alec’s name against the clock while battling the same habit that has already cost him his family. As he retraces the events around Jennie’s death and the Stanford household where the weekend unfolded, the investigation narrows around class privilege, buried resentments, and his own failures. Ann Todd and Leo McKern are among the figures caught up in David’s search.
